Best Director: Frank Lloyd (Divine Lady) Sergei Eisenstein (October: Ten Days that Shook the World)

Sergei Eisenstein invented the montage in Battleship Potemkin (1925). But seeing as the Oscars weren’t even around then, Eistenstein gets our statue for October: Ten Days that Shook the World, a film that is a chore to get through, but one that carries symbolic image juxtapositions.

Best Actor: Warner Baxter (In Old Arizona) Buster Keaton (Steamboat Bill Jr.)

Best Actress: Mary Pickford (Coquette) Maria Falconetti (The Passion of Joan of Arc)

Best Screenplay: The Patriot    The Passion of Joan of Arc
